WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - May 3 - The Erie Community College baseball team improved to 28-15 overall with 14-2 and 12-2 wins over Corning CC Thursday afternoon at the ECC North Campus.
The Kats hit three home runs in the first game. Freshman Adam Urschel (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to give the Kats the win. Sophomores Mike Wagner (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Mary's) and Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning. The Kats plated five runs in the third and five more in the sixth. Wagner had three hits to go with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore Ron Lawrence (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cleveland Hill) struck out five in five innings for the win.
Wagner extended his hit streak to 18 games by collecting two hits in the nightcap. He also scored twice and stole two bases as freshman Jordan Kumro (Cheektowaga, N.Y./West Seneca East) struck out five and allowed four hits in the five-inning game. Sophomore Adam Grace (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) added three hits and three RBI while classmate Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) had two hits and two stolen bases.
ECC will play Hudson Valley CC in the first round of the Region III Tournament in a best-of-three series. The first two games will start at 1 p.m. Saturday at the ECC North Campus with a game, if necessary, Sunday at noon at ECC.
