CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – (Feb. 12) – Michael Boice (Kenmore) scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Erie Community College hockey team to a 10-4 victory Saturday over Broome Community College at Cheektowaga Recreation Center Ice Rink. The win, ECC’s fifth consecutive, improved the Kats’ record to 16-5.
ECC is the nation's third-ranked team while Broome CC was fifth in this week's poll.
Defensemen Zachary Williams (Buffalo) opened the Kats’ scoring with wrist shot at 4:17 in the first period. Boice scored his first goal of the game when he tipped a shot from the point by Anthony Domros (West Seneca). Mark Trigilio (Orchard Park) got an assist on the goal, one of his four on the day. Trigilio extended the lead to the 3-0 late in the period with a short-handed goal.
Frank Briandi (Tonawanda) made it 4-0 just 2:51 into the second period when he walked into the slot untouched and his wrist shot beat the goaltender on the stick side. Boice tallied his second goal to make it 5-0 with assists from Dirk Thur (Clarence Center) and Domros. Broome would cut the lead to 5-1 on the power play, one of its three extra-strength goals.
Briandi scored his second with assists coming from Ryan Vertino (Grand Island) and Nicholas Friol (Orchard Park). Following another Broome power-play goal, Todd Lyness (North Tonawanda) scored the Kats’ second short-handed marker and Boice completed the hat trick with 1:21 left in the second period.
Vertino and Boice each added the goals in the third period for the final margin.
Kats goaltender Andrew Yelich (Fredonia) got the win.
The Kats will travel to Rochester to play Monroe Community College, the nation's top-ranked squad, at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
