ALFRED, N.Y. (Sept. 18) - Erie Community College kicker Mike Lawandus
(Lancaster, N.Y./Sweet Home) kicked a career-long 41-yard field goal in overtime to give the Kats a 20-17 victory over Alfred State College in Northeast Football Conference action Saturday night at Pioneer Stadium. ECC improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in NFC play while the Pioneers are 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference.
To open overtime, ECC stopped Alfred State when Malik Thompson (New Castle, Del./Williams Penn) recovered a fumble, giving ECC the ball. The Kats had a one-yard completion between two incomplete passes, setting the stage for Lawandus' kick.
The teams also played an overtime contest in 2005 with Alfred State recording the 31-28 win.
To set up overtime, Alfred State quarterback Cody Scepaniak had a two-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion with 21.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.
ECC freshman quarterback Taylor Henry (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester) threw for a career-high 219 yards and two touchdowns as the Kats.
After converting a fake punt deep in their own territory, the Kats' Henry hit Ben Pinkard (Irma, S.C./Dutch Fork H.S.) on a slant pass. Pinkard then faked the free safety and broke away for a 46-yard touchdown with 2:10 to play before halftime. Facing fourth down and nine yards to go on the ECC 13, Taylor Miller (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) found a wide-open Malcolm Ricks (Pampano Beach, Fla./Blanche Ely H.S.) beyond the Pioneers’ defense and Ricks ran out of bounds on the ECC 37. On the next play, Henry found Pinkard on a slant for 17 yards before the two connected on the same play for the score. Pinkard caught eight passes for a career-high 118 yards.
ECC then stopped Alfred State's attempt to answer when Moses Smith (North Charlestown, S.C./North Charleston) intercepted a pass in the end zone with 57 seconds remaining.
In the third quarter, Alfred State made it 10-9 with a 38-yard run by Caleb Meroski who broke through the blitzing ECC line and went untouched. The Pioneers missed the extra-point attempt.
ECC recovered a bad snap to the ASC punter on the Pioneer 25-yardline. Facing 3rd-and-10 and blitzing defense, Henry hit Miller with a 25-yard pass with 12:45 left.
The Kats took the opening drive downfield and the drive culminated with a 20-yard field goal by Lawandus.
