Kats Hold Awards Night

BUFFALO, N.Y. – May 16 – The Erie Community College athletics department held its annual awards night Monday at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.

In addition to the presentation of the national championship rings to the hockey and men’s bowling teams, each team honored its most valuable player. The athletics department also named the athletes of the year and honored various individuals for the contributions.

The most valuable players were:

• Kermit Helmer Award (Men’s Bowling MVP) – David Zajac, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
• Kermit Helmer Award (Women’s Bowling MVP) – Jenna Law, Milford, Mich.
• Larry Katzman Award (Men’s Soccer MVP) – Craig Raines, Gloucester, Va.
• Cheerleading MVP – Nicole Diodate, West Seneca, N.Y.
• Women’s Soccer MVP – Susanne Jacobs, Amherst, N.Y.
• Volleyball MVP – Alex DiGiore, Hamburg, N.Y.
• Football Offensive Player of the Year – Zedric Joseph, West Palm Beach, Fla.
• Ralph J. Galanti, Jr., Award (Hockey MVP) – Nicholas Friol, Orchard Park, N.Y.
• Helen DiPota Award (Women’s Basketball MVP) – Breanna Harris, Cheektowaga, N.Y.
• Richard R. Dry Award (Men’s Basketball MVP) – God’s Gift Achiuwa, Port Harcourt, Rivers, Nigeria
• Swimming and Diving – Women’s MVP – Caitlin Schwinge, Amherst, N.Y.; Men’s MVP – Brett Farrell, Derby, N.Y.
• Marie Stachowski Award (Softball MVP) – Megan Marciniak, Buffalo, N.Y.
• Lacrosse MVP – Sarah Kirchberger, West Seneca, N.Y.
• Paschal C. Rubino Award (Baseball MVP) – Neal DeMartin, Grand Island, N.Y.

Also awarded were the following:

• Appreciation Award – Susan Holdaway, Erie CC employee
• George Killian Award – Mary Jo Monnin, Erie CC Athletics Hall of Fame member
• Helen R. Cornell Award – Anastasia Zarbo (women’s soccer, lacrosse), West Seneca, N.Y.
• Ralph J. Galanti, Sr. Athletic Scholarship Award – Nicholas Friol (hockey), Orchard Park, N.Y.
• Grace Galanti Athletic Achievement Award – Katie Boxler (volleyball), Attica, N.Y.
• Lawrence C. Spring Female Athlete of the Year – Jenna Law (women’s bowling), Milford, Mich.
• Lawrence C. Spring Male Athlete of the Year – God’s Gift Achiuwa (men’s basketball), Port Harcourt, Rivers, Nigeria
