SANBORN, N.Y. - Oct. 30 - The Erie Community College volleyball team suffered just its fourth loss of the season Sunday, falling in four sets to unbeaten Niagara County Community College in the Region III Tournament's championship game held at NCCC. The Kats, who were ranked eighth in last week's poll, finish 29-4 with a 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-13 loss to NCCC, which was ranked sixth and improved to 33-0.
"We started off really well," ECC head coach Craig Starzynski said. "With our young team, momentum is a key and I thought we'd build upon our first-set win. NCCC settled down played really well. We were too aggressive at times, always trying to make the perfect play."
Freshman outside hitter Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) led the Kats with 13 kills, 18 digs and two ace serves while Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added 12 kills and five blocks.
After NCCC took a 23-22 lead in game, ECC tied it and then took a 24-23 lead on a Russi ace. Susan Muldoon (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy Academy) then recorded a kill to give the Kats the win.
NCCC opened a 12-4 lead in the second set as the Thunderwolves recorded the win. NCCC would use a 9-2 run midway through the third set to take a 17-7 lead. A 15-4 run in the fourth set powered the Thunderwolves to the win
