Erie Community College is one of 30 State University of New York colleges this March in the first-ever “SUNY Mascot Madness.” The contest includes representation from the 472 athletic teams and 220,000 students, matching SUNY school mascots against one another in a bracket-style competition modeled after the college basketball tournaments that take place each March.
ECC and Pawz are the 19th seed in the tournament. ECC meets Plattsburgh (14 seed) in the first round. The winner will meet the winner of Binghamton (3 seed) vs. Orange County (30 seed). Seed rankings are based on the number of teams that a particular campus represents. Enrollment data was used to break any ties. The top two seeds, Brockport and Cortland, received first-round byes.
Voting is conducted via social media and voters must follow SUNY on Twitter (@SUNY) or “like” it on Facebook (www.facebook.com/generationsuny
). Each person is allowed one vote per round, per matchup.
The official launch of SUNY Mascot Madness will be March 4 at noon. The competition schedule includes five rounds with the final round taking place from March 29 through April 4. The winning school will receive an undisclosed prize from the SUNY office.
