BUFFALO, N.Y. – Oct. 11 – In a matchup of nationally ranked teams, No. 7 Niagara County Community College picked up a 25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 25-21 win over No. 9 Erie Community College Tuesday night at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
The loss snapped the Kats’ 12-match win streak and drop their record to 20-2 while NCCC is now 22-0.
The Kats’ freshman duo of Susan Muldoon (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy Academy) recorded 12 kills and three service aces while Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) led ECC with 13 kills. Sophomore setter Danielle Aurellio-Clark (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had 35 assists. Sophomore Molly Gasuik (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy Academy had nine digs while freshman Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) recorded six blocks.
“To beat a team like that, you have to be perfect in all phases of the game. We were close but we made 19 hitting errors,” ECC head coach Craig Starzynski said. “We played great excerpt for a couple key moments at the end of a couple sets.”
NCCC used a 5-1 run to close the first set while the Kats responded with an 8-1 run to build a 21-14 lead on their way to win the second. Bean had two kills and a block during that run.
The third set saw NCCC use an 8-1 run to take a 21-15 lead while ECC answered with a 4-1 run, NCCC scored three of the set’s final four points for the win.
The teams traded the lead in the fourth set before three ECC hitting errors gave NCCC a 24-21 lead.
ECC will host a Region III pod tournament at the Flickinger Center. Matches start at 9 a.m.
