HERKIMER, N.Y. - Sept. 8 - The ninth-ranked Erie Community College volleyball team won two of its three matches at Saturday's Herkimer County CC Tournament in Region III action.
The Kats downed Mohawk Valley CC, 20-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-16, as sophomore All-America Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) had 19 kills and sophomore libero Ashley Viengmay (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) added 17 digs.
"Ashley kept us in the match and she was making dig after dig, allowing us to keep on the attack," ECC coach Craig Starzynski said.
ECC then downed SUNY Delhi, 25-20, 25-17, 26-24, as Bean recorded 15 kills.
"Rylie came up with kills at big moments," Starzynski said.
Despite winning the first two sets and 18 kills by Bean, the Kats fell in five sets to Herkimer County CC, 22-25, 26-28, 25-15, 25-19, 15-10.
"They came out and opened a big lead in the third set and took control of the match. We couldn't recover," Starzynski said.
In the three matches, Bean recorded 52 kills, 40 digs and five blocks. Viengmay recorded 54 digs. Sophomore Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added 42 kills and 17 assists while freshman Emilee Piechocki (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander) was credited with 11 service aces.
The Kats, now 6-2, will play Genesee CC at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Flickinger Center.
