WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – April 27 – Sophomore Austin Benshadle (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) and freshman Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) combined for 13 hits, 10 runs batted in and nine runs scored as the Erie Community College baseball team improved to 21-13 with wins of 16-6 and 17-2 over Broome Community College Wednesday at the ECC North campus field.
Benshadle drove in two runs and scored three while going 5-for-5 in the opener. Zellner doubled and homered in that game which saw ECC pull away by scoring four in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the sixth. The game was tied 4-4 after three innings. Freshman Nick Schuh (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) threw 2 and 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
Zellner drove in three runs, scored twice and collected three hits in game two to back sophomore Nick Cummings (Akron, N.Y./Akron) who got all of the runs he needed when the Kats erupted for 10 runs in the first inning. Cummings allowed four hits while throwing a complete game.
Sophomore Emilio Arteta (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop) drove in five runs with a pair of doubles while freshman Matt Creenan (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) hit a three-run home run. Benshadle and Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) each recorded two hits and scored twice.
The Kats, who have won eight consecutive home games, will play Finger Lakes Community College at ECC North in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Thursday.
