Turnovers Doom Kats in 17-7 Loss

Saturday, September 01, 2012

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Sept. 1 - Five turnovers spelled doom for the Erie Community College football team Saturday afternoon at Jim Ball Stadium. The Kats threw four interceptions, one being returned for the game-clinching touchdown,  and lost a fumble in the 17-7 loss to Louisburg (N.C.) College in Northeast Football Conference action.

The Kats took an early 7-0 lead built on two safeties and a school-record tying 52-yard field goal by freshman Tyler Blackburn (Montrose, Mich./Montrose).

ECC got on the board after a punt by freshman Conor Clarke (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) was downed at the 1-yardline. On the next play, Louisburg’s Mark Pace was tackled in the end zone by freshman linebackers Brandon Cannon (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) and Okoya Anderson (Orchard Park, N.Y.). The tackle was one of Cannon’s 13, one shy of the school record.

Following an interception, the Hurricanes had the ball on their own 4-yardline. Louisburg completed a screen pass to John Wheatley but ECC linebacker Kyril Threats (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) tackled Wheatley in the end zone for a 4-0 lead.

The teams traded possessions before ECC faced fourth down on the LC 36. After an ECC time-out, Blackburn drilled the school-record tying kick. John Fralicker set the record against Morrisville State, Aug. 30, 2003.

Louisburg College then scored on a 64-yard pass play to tie the contest.

In the second half, the ECC defense made a goal-line stand, following a lost fumble. The Kats stopped Louisburg four times from their 3-yard line. However, on Louisburg’s next possession, the Hurricanes took the lead on a 26-yard field goal by Ryan Samuels.

ECC had its fourth-quarter drives stopped by an interception, an incomplete pass, a dropped pass, and an interception. The second fourth-quarter interception was returned by Kenny Watt for a 28-yard touchdown with 1:31 remaining.
ECC running back Derick Peters (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) led the Kats with 96 yards rushing on 16 attempts.

ECC will play Alfred State College Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at Jim Ball Stadium. The contest will be ECC’s homecoming and Kids’ Day celebration.
