LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. - May 18 - Freshman Michael Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont./St. David's) allowed four hits while pitching a complete game to lift the Erie Community College baseball team to a 2-1 win over Onondaga CC Saturday afternoon at the Region III Tournament at Veterans Memorial Park.
Schnurr improved to 9-0, one shy of the school's single-season win record, as the Kats improved to 38-19. The 38 wins are the second-most in school history. Schnurr set the single-season record for most innings pitched, 77.1, while striking out four.
Sophomore Vinny Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning when he scored on a double by sophomore Brian Barry (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore). Sherman led off the inning with a single before Barry's hit to left field plated Sherman.
Sherman drove in the Kats' other run in the third inning. Freshman Brett Bauth (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) singled before Sherman delivered a two-out double to score Bauth with the game's first run. Onondaga CC tied the game with a run in the fifth.
With two hits, Barry is now hitting .465 with 23 doubles and a school-record 70 RBI. The 23 doubles and 70 RBI are also NJCAA Division III-leading figures.
The Kats are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Saturday. ECC will play the loser of Saturday's contest between fifth-ranked Niagara County CC and seventh-ranked Herkimer County CC in another elimination game.
