Top-ranked Kats beat Monroe
Top-ranked Erie Community College (22-1) went on a 27-4 run midway
through the second half and cruised to a 79-57 win over No. 3 Monroe
Community College (19-2) in a matchup of nationally-ranked NJCAA
Division II programs this evening in Buffalo.
Monroe erased a six point halftime deficit by taking a 45-44 lead on
a steal and a layup by Bobby Bell with 14:00 remaining in the contest.
However, it was all Kats after that.
Erie responded by scoring the next 13 points and by the time the run
was over, the Kats had built a 71-49 lead with 4:45 remaining in the
Freshman forward God’s Gift Achiuwa controlled the paint for the
Kats all evening, finishing the game with 16 points, 18 rebounds, seven
blocked shots and four assists. Sophomore forward Freddy Appiah hit
four-of-seven shots from beyond the arc en route to 16 points. He also
handed out five assists. Sophomore guard Tola Lawal added 13 points and
five rebounds and Tyshawn Edwards chipped in 11 points.
In the teams’ first meeting of the year – a 100-99 win by Erie on
January 23-Erie committed 33 turnovers and Monroe hit 14-of-28 shots
from beyond the arc. Tonight, Erie cut its turnovers to 18 and held
Monroe to just three-of-16 shooting from three point land.
Erie returns to action Thursday, February 11 when it visits Genesee
Community College. The game is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m.
