EAST PEORIA, Ill. - March 20 - Johnson County (Kan.) Community College, the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division II, used a 13-0 run to open Tuesday's NCAA Division II Tournament first-round game against Erie Community College. The Cavaliers improved to 32-1 with the 96-23 victory at the Lorene Ramsey Gymnasium on the campus of Illinois Central College. ECC is now 16-14.
The Kats, who were making their first-ever appearance in the NJCAA Division II Tournament, missed their first 11 field goal attempts but scored when freshman forward Paige Hennings (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cleveland Hill) made the second of two free throws at 14:53. ECC trailed 52-10 at halftime. The Kats made 9 of 48 field goals in the game. Sophomore Bianca Dennis (Cleveland, Ohio/Maple Heights) led ECC with eight points, three rebounds and a blocked shot.
Polly Harrington led the Cavaliers with 24 points. She was one of five JCCC players scoring in double figures.
ECC will play Prairie State at noon Thursday in the consolation round.
