WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - May 8 - The Erie Community College baseball team erupted for six runs in the eighth inning to record an 11-5 win over Herkimer County Community College Sunday in the Region III playoffs at the ECC North Campus field.
Sophomore outfielder Neal Demartin (Grand Island/Grand Island) led ECC with two hits and four runs batted in.
The Kats and HCCC were tied 5-5 after 7 and 1/2 innings. ECC's Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) led off the frame with a single before Emilio Arteta (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop), Mike Wagner (Clarence, N.Y./St. Mary's) and Mike Ferracuti (Toronto, Ont./Michael Powers) walked to force in one run. T.J. Singh (Oakville, Ont./Holy Trinity) then delivered a pinch-hith single to right field for an 8-5 lead. Dylan Huch (Gowanda, N.Y./Gowanda) singled to make it 9-5. One out later, Demartin singled to give ECC the 11-5 lead.
Wagner picked up the win in relief, recording four outs. ECC starter Mike Tolsma (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) scattered 13 hits in 7 and 2/3 innings.
The Kats used a four-run third inning, also taking advantage of walks before Demartin tripled to right field on a 2-2 pitch.
Herkimer CCC scored two runs in the seventh and added two runs in the eighth to make it 5-5, setting up ECC's outburst.
The Kats advance to the Region III playoffs in Little Falls, N.Y., with a game slated for Friday. Tournament pairings are still to be announced.
