Lawal player of the week
Tola Lawal, a sophomore guard on the Erie Community College men’s
basketball team, was named the NJCAA Division II Player of the Week and
the Region III Male Athlete of the Week for his performances in leading
the Kats to three wins during the week.
On Tuesday, January 19, Lawal scored 29 points, with 10 rebounds, four
assists, and four steals in 26 minutes of play to earn himself a
double-double and earn the Kats a 116-99 win over Niagara County
Community College. Two days later, Lawal and the Kats earned a decisive
107-69 win over Jamestown Community College-Olean where he scored 14
points on seven-of-12 shooting from the floor with six rebounds, five
assists, and three steals in 17 minutes of play. Last Saturday, in a
100-99 win at top-ranked Monroe Community College, Lawal had his
biggest game of the week scoring 33 points on 14 of 19 shooting with
five of those points coming from the foul line. He would also grab
eight rebounds, dish out one assist, and one steal in 35 minutes of
Overall for the week, Lawal averaged 25.3 points per game while
shooting 54.6 percent (30-of-55), 22.2 percent from beyond the arc
(two-for-nine), and 56 percent from the line (14-for-25). He averaged
eight rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.7 steals per game.
Erie currently sports a 17-1 record and is ranked No. 2 in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll.
