WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – May 7 – With the season on the line, Ron Lawrence struck out eight batters to lead the Erie Community College baseball to a win In Saturday’s Region III playoff games at the ECC North campus field. Lawrence and the Kats picked up a 4-3 win over Herkimer County Community College after the Generals downed ECC 8-4 in game one. The teams will play at noon Sunday with the winner advancing.
ECC is now 24-16.
Lawrence, a freshman right-handed pitcher from Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cleveland Hill, scattered seven hits. He gave up two hits with two outs in the top of the ninth but then got the final out on a fly ball to left.
The Kats opened game two by scoring three runs in the first inning on three hits and taking advantage of an error and two wild pitches. Herkimer CCC answered with two runs after two outs in the second inning to cut it to 3-2. Herkimer CC added a run to tie the game before ECC took a 4-3 lead in the sixth.
Neal Demartin (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) walked and Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) singled to right field. Demartin reached third base and the throw went by the third baseman, allowing Demartin to score.
In game one, the Kats held a 4-3 lead after seven innings. Herkimer CCC then plated five runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batter in the eighth inning for an 8-4 lead. Sophomore Alex Dannett (Brampton, Ont./Brampton Centennial) went 7 1/3 innings, striking out six.
All-time ECC hit leader Austin Benshadle (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) had three hits and scored two runs in game one. Demartin and Mike Ferracuti (Toronto, Ont./Michael Powers) each added two singles.
The win was ECC head coach Joe Bauth’s 725th career victory.
