ROCHESTER, N.Y.- Feb. 26 – Erie Community College’s Frank Briandi (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Nicholas Friol (Orchard Park) combined for nine points as the Kats rolled to a 9-1 win over Hudson Valley Community College in semifinal action Saturday at the NJCAA Ice Hockey Championships.
The Kats’ semifinal win puts them in Sunday’s 2 p.m. national championship game against Monroe Community College. Monroe CC is the nation’s top-ranked team while ECC is ranked third. ECC was the 2010 NCJAA runner-up.
Friol had two goals and two assists while Briandi had five assists.
The Kats broke through quickly as John Rabb (Depew, N.Y.) scored a short-handed goal just 2:02 into the contest. Friol then made it 2-0 just over two minutes later. After Hudson Valley scored, Todd Lyness (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Friol recorded goals to give ECC a 4-1 lead after one.
The Kats pushed the lead to 7-1 after two periods when Ryan Vertino (Grand Island) scored twice and Mark Kwietniewski (West Seneca, N.Y.) added one.
Paul Brown (Depew, N.Y.) and Steve Milley (Hamburg, N.Y.) each added a goal in the third period for the final margin.
Andrew Yelich (Fredonia, N.Y.) made 29 saves to record the victory.
