DANVILLE, Ill. - March 16 - Freshman guard Sam Hattin (Hamilton, Ont./Our Savior) equaled his career high with 22 points to lead the Erie Community College men's basketball team to an 85-77 win over Parkland (Ill.) College Wednesday in the first round of the NJCAA Division II Tournament at Danville Area Community College. Hattin also scored 22 points against Monroe Community College Feb. 8, 2011.
The Kats, the tournament's seventh seed, improve to 27-2 and will play Thursday at 9:30 p.m. (Eastern) against the winner of the Louisburg/Kalamazoo Valley Community College game.
The win was the the first-ever first-round win in the NJCAA Tournament for ECC head coach Alex Nwora who has guided ECC to four tournament berths.
Tyshawn Edwards (Buffalo/Grover Cleveland) had 17 points, 15 coming in the second half. God's Gift Achiuwa (Port Harcourt, River States, Nigeria) added 15 points and 11 rebounds for his 21st double-double of the season. Dequan Jones (Brooklyn/Pacific) recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds.
After a back-and-forth first half, ECC build a 73-68 lead with four minutes remaining before scoring 10-straight points. Edwards scored six of those, two on drives to the basket and one on an offensive rebound.
Parkland (Ill.) College (19-12) was led by D. J. Hoskins' 17 points.
