NORTH EAST, Pa. - March 4 - Bianca Dennis scored 28 points and snared 11 rebounds while Mercedezes Ephraim added 17 points and 10 assists as the Erie Community College women's basketball team recorded a 70-62 win over Jamestown Community College Sunday afternoon to win the Region III Tournament. The tournament title is the first in the ECC program's history. The Kats, 16-13, advance to the NJCAA Division II Tournament, held March 20-24 at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill.
Dennis, a sophomore guard from Cleveland, Ohio/Maple Heights, scored 19 of her points in the first half as ECC built a 30-19 lead. Ephraim, also a sophomore guard from Cleveland, Ohio/Maple Heights, then scored 14 points to go with six assists and three steals in the second half as the Kats picked up the win. The double-double was Dennis' fourth of the season and the second for Ephraim, who has recorded double-doubles in two of the three Kats' postseason wins.
Sophomore guard Riana Ward (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) added 11 points and three steals.
The Region III Tournament championship game win was the first in five tries for ECC. ECC's last regional championship game appearance was a loss to Hilbert Community College 86-51 in the 1989 tournament, held at Cayuga Community College. ECC also appeared in the 1980, 1981 and 1983 regional tournament finals.
