CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – (Nov. 20) – The Erie Community College hockey team scored two power-play goals and scored on two odd-man rushes in a 6-2 win over the County College of Morris on Saturday at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center Ice Rink. The Kats improve to 6-1 with the win.
Mark Trigilio (Orchard Park) opened the scoring for the Kats 2:12 into the contest. He skated past the defensemen and placed his wrist shot between the goaltender’s legs. CC of Morris tied the game 1-1 just 22 seconds later but a one-timer by Nicholas Friol (Orchard Park) gave the Kats a 2-1 lead with two minutes remaining in the first period.
The Kats would extend their lead to 3-1 on the power play as Friol put back a rebound in front of the net for his second goal of the game. Morris cut the lead to 3-2 with a power-play goal of its own 5:47 into the second, but once again, a late Kats goal, this time by Todd Lyness (North Tonawanda) on a 2-on-0 break with Friol, would give them a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.
In the third period, Justin Banaszak (Lancaster) scored on a 2-on-1 break with Frank Briandi (Tonawanda) getting the assist 13:22 into the third period. With 50 seconds remaining, Paul Brown (Depew) scored a power-play goal on a great individual effort skating past two College of Morris defenders on his way to the net.
Friol finished with two goals and an assist while Lyness and Brown each recorded a goal and an assist.
The teams meet again at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center Ice Rink.
