Kats Sweep Tompkins Cortland; Benshadle Sets ECC Hit Mark

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – May 1 – The Erie Community College baseball team ran its home win streak to 10 games with a sweep of Tompkins Cortland Community College Sunday. The Kats recorded wins of 13-9 and 13-3 to improve to 23-15 overall.
Sophomore outfielder Austin Benshadle (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) set the ECC record for career hits with a single to right-center field in game two. Benshadle now has 105 career hits to top Jeff Sargent’s mark of 104. Sargent played for ECC in the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Freshman shortstop Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) had three hits while driving in four runs. Jesse Zellner  (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) had four hits in the opener while Neal Demartin (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) added three. Joe Christiano (Depew, N.Y./Depew) added two hits and two runs batted in. Mike Tolsma (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) pitched 2 and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win.
In game two, Cody Dunn (Ottawa, Ont./Bea Trice des Loges) allowed four hits and struck out five while pitching all five innings. Zellner hit a three-run home run while Demartin drove in three hits on two hits.
ECC plays at Onondaga Community College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday.
