Sunday, January 20, 2013

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - Jan. 20 - Freshman forward Matt Shumate (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) scored two third-period goals to lift the Erie Community College hockey team to a 7-5 win over Marist College (ACHA) Sunday afternoon at the Cheektowaga Rec Center.

Shumate gave the Kats a 5-4 lead with just over four minutes remaining when his shot at the side of the net beat the Marist goaltender on the stick side. Shumate, at almost the same spot on the ice as his first goal, then tapped in a rebound with 1:05 left for a 6-5 lead.

Sophomore forward Ryan Rogalski (Lancaster, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists. Freshman Bradley Ferrell (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored two second-period goals and assisted on Rogalski's second goal of the contest. Sophomore goaltender Shane Mullen (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) made 36 saves for the Kats.

The Kats, now 10-6, will play third-ranked Hudson Valley CC at 3:20 p.m. Saturday at the Cheektowaga Rec Center.
