WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - April 23 - The Erie Community College baseball team continued its winning ways Saturday, sweeping a Region III doubleheader from Onondaga Community College. The Kats, behind a one-hit, nine-strikeout performance by freshman Brandon Nemeti (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), won the opener 3-0 and then rolled to a 16-2 win (five innings) in game two.
ECC improved to 19-13 overall and has won its last six home contests.
Nemeti struck out the side in the first inning and only allowed a single in the fourth inning. Austin Benshadle (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) singled and tripled in game one, scoring twice. Neal Demartin (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) drove in Benshadle in the first inning with a double.
ECC opened game two with a three-run first inning and added four more in the second and third innings. Benshadle recorded three hits and scored three runs while Demartin and Joe Pantano (Dunkirk, N.Y./St. Francis) each added three hits. Demartin scored four runs and drove in two while Pantano drove in three runs and scored three times. Travis Denman (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) hit a two-run home run in the second inning after Demartin had an RBI triple and Pantano drove in Demartin with a single. Cody Alessi (Clearwater, Fla./Eastlake) recorded the win.
The Kats will play Finger Lakes Community College in a Tuesday doubleheader at Canandaigua.
