ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – March 15 – The Erie Community College baseball team ran its win streak to seven games with a 15-10, 14-0 doubleheader sweep of Waubonsee (Ill.) Community College Thursday night. The Kats, now 7-1 and ranked sixth in this week’s NJCAA Division III poll, used several big innings in the wins.
ECC trailed 3-1 after two innings in the opener but scored six times in the fourth frame and five times in the fifth to take the lead and record the win.
Sophomore Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) drove in five runs with three doubles. Freshman Adam Urschel (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) had two hits to go with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Freshman Steven Hubbs (Hamilton, Ont./Sir Winston Churchill) also scored three times and had a pair of hits. Sophomore Matt Creenan (Williamsville, N.Y./Clarence) continued his hot hitting by recording three hits. Sophomore Ron Lawrence (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cleveland Hill) picked up the win.
In game two, the Kats scored five times in the first, once in the second, and then four times in both the fourth and fifth innings to record the 14-0 win in five innings. Sophomore Mike Tolsma (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) struck out six in five innings to record the complete game shutout.
Zellner had two hits and drove in one while Urschel added two hits and two runs scored. Sophomore Mike Wagner (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Mary’s) scored three times and drove in two runs.
The Kats will play a Friday doubleheader against Burlington County (N.J.) College.
