ROCHESTER, N.Y. - March 3 - The Erie Community College men's basketball team's two-year reign as the Region III Tournament champions came to an end Sunday as the Kats fell 98-89 to No. 5 Monroe CC. ECC ends the season with a 22-6 record.
The Kats, who were ranked 14th in last week's poll, were led by freshman guard Devon Elliott (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) as he scored a game-high 30 points and snared nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Isaiah Jefferson (Buffalo, N.Y./Riverside) added 17 points and freshman guard Keron Briggs (Buffalo, N.Y./Sweet Home) recorded 14 points and seven assists. Sophomore forward Rayshawn Sumlin (Cleveland, Ohio/Martin Luther King) added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Monroe, 28-3, was led by John Velez-Rivera's 26 points. He made eight three-point field goals.
ECC led 30-22 with 9:17 to play in the first half after a three-point field goal by Darale Young (Buffalo, N.Y./Middle College) only to see Monroe CC close the half with a 26-10 run for a 48-40 edge at the break. Elliott then brought the Kats within one, 61-60, after a basket with 14:24 to play but the Tribunes went on a 10-0 run in the next two minutes and kept the lead at or near double digits the rest of the way.
