DANVILLE, Ill. - March 22 - Brandon Emmitt sank a three-point field goal at the buzzer to lift the Erie Community College men's basketball team to an 84-81 win over Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley (Mo.) in the consolation round Thursday in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in the Mary Miller Gymnasium at Danville Area Community College.
Emmitt, a sophomore guard from Akron, Ohio, received the ball after the Kats' initial option was double-covered. Emmitt finished with nine points, all coming on three-point field goals.
Sophomore forward Yandell Denis (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavierian) led the game with 23 points. Sophomore Sam Hattin (Hamilton, Ont./Our Savior) added 15 points while freshman forward Eyimofee Edukugho (Warri, Nigeria/Our Savior New American School) had 11 points. Sophomore guard Dequan Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y./Pacific) and sophomore forward Anthony Mason (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bedford Academy) each scored 10 points.
The Kats trailed 47-39 early in the second half as MCC-Penn Valley opened the period with six-straight points. ECC took a 75-65 lead with 8:08 left on a Hattin three-point field goal. MCC-Penn Valley answered with a 13-3 run before Denis sank the second of two foul shots to give ECC a 79-78 lead with 2:18 remaining. The teams traded points before Emmitt's game-winning shot.
