BUFFALO, N.Y. – March 14 – The Erie Community College men’s basketball team will play Parkland (Ill.) College Wednesday at noon (Eastern) in the first round of the NJCAA Division II Tournament in Danville, Ill. The contest is the first of five games Wednesday. The tournament opens Tuesday with six games.
The Kats, the tournament’s seventh seed, are 26-2 and were ranked fourth in the March 1 poll while Parkland enters the tournament at 21-11.
ECC is led by sophomore forward God’s Gift Achiuwa (Port Harcourt, River States, Nigeria). Achiuwa, Region III’s most outstanding player, ranks fifth in the NJCAA at 23.3 points per game and ninth at 11.96 rebounds per game. Classmate Tyshawn Edwards, a first-team All-Region III selection, (Buffalo/Grover Cleveland) averages 20.4 points per game and ranks 20th in the division.
The Kats are making their fourth appearance since 2001 and have won three games in the previous three trips.
ECC ranks third in scoring offense at 92.96 points per game while Parkland is 20th in points allowed, 69.34 points per game.
Parkland, which won the first-ever NJCAA Division II title in 1986 and was the 1988 runner-up, is making its first appearance since 1994. Sophomore guard DJ Hoskins leads the team at 16 points per game while freshman forward Jamel Johnson averages 7.1 rebounds per game.
Depending on the outcome of Wednesday’s game, ECC is scheduled to play at either 2 p.m. (loser’s bracket) or 9:30 p.m. (winner’s bracket) Thursday.
The 16-team, double-elimination tournament concludes Saturday.
