BUFFALO, N.Y. – Oct. 22 – The Erie Community College volleyball team split its two matches at Saturday’s Western New York Athletic Conference Tournament at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
ECC defeated Monroe Community College, 25-15, 25-15, 25-14, before dropping a 25-20, 15-25, 25-23, 25-22 decision to Genesee Community College in the semifinals. The Kats are now 25-3 and ranked eighth in the NJCAA Division III polls. Two of ECC’s losses have been to Genesee CC, a NJCAA Division II school
“I think we’ve shown a lot of improvement form the first time we played them to today,” said ECC head coach Craig Starzynski, who was named the WNYAC Coach of the Year. “We eliminated a lot of our hitting errors as we’ve worked on being consistent as possible in all phases of the game and to put the ball over with a purpose every time.”
In the win over Monroe CC, freshman middle hitter Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) had 13 kills, 13 digs and five blocks while sophomore setter Danielle Aurellio-Clark added five aces and 35 assists.
Freshman Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier picked up 14 kills and 15 digs against Genesee CC while Bean added five blocks and Aurellio-Clark made 39 assists.
The Kats will be the second-seeded team in the Region III Tournament held Oct. 29-30 at Niagara County Community College.
