WATERTOWN, N.Y. - Sept. 1 - The Erie Community College volleyball team, the nation's eighth-ranked team in the NJCAA Division III preseason poll, posted a 4-1 record at the Jefferson Community College Tournament Saturday.
The Kats were led by 2011 first-team All-America selection Rylie Bean (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) who recorded a team-high 58 kills and nine service aces. Sophomore Katie Russi (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added 53 kills and 44 digs. Freshman setter Jennifer Freeman (Depew, N.Y./Depew) was credited with 130 assists.
The Kats picked up three wins in pool play, defeating Corning CC, 25-18, 25-11; Jefferson CC, 26-24, 25-19; and Finger Lakes CC, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9. ECC then edged Onondaga CC, 25-12, 19-25, 15-5, in the semifinals before falling to Monroe CC, 25-23, 26-24.
"We played good volleyball," ECC head coach Craig Starzynski said. "In the finals, Monroe CC was solid all around and didn't make any mistakes. We made some poor decisions at the end and it cost us.
"Jen (Freeman) made a lot of really good decisions with the ball, setting up our hitters to make a lot of good swings," Starzynski added.
The Kats are scheduled to play Herkimer County CC, Mohawk Valley CC and SUNY Delhi in pool play in a tournament at Herkimer (N.Y.) County CC.
