LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. - May 18 - Sophomore Brian Barry (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) scattered five hits while striking out eight batters as the Erie Community College baseball team defeated seventh-ranked Herkimer County CC 6-3 Saturday night in the Region III Tournament at Veterans Memorial Park. Barry also had three hits, including a double and a home run as the Kats improved to 39-19, tying the school record set in 2005 for most wins in a season.
ECC took advantage of two errors and a wild pitch to score two runs in the second inning. Vinny Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) recorded one of his three singles to open the third frame. Sherman scored on a single by Tyler Hoffhines (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster). After Herkimer County CC scored three runs in its half of the third, Barry gave the Kats a 4-3 lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Sherman drove in Nick Caboot (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) with a one-out single in the eighth inning to give ECC a 5-3 lead. Hoffhines then drew a bases-loaded walk to score Sherman for a 6-3 lead.
The Kats will play fifth-ranked Niagara County CC at noon Sunday. If ECC wins that game, the teams will play again at 3:30 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament.
