ERIE, Pa. - Feb. 5 - The Erie Community College men's basketball team suffered its first loss in Region III play Saturday night, dropping a 93-91 decision to Mercyhurst North East at Penn State-Behrend's Junker Center. ECC is now 20-2 overall and 9-1 in region action. Mercyhurst NE is now 15-5, 6-3.
The Kats, the nation's second-ranked team, had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but missed two free throws. Tyshawn Edwards (Buffalo/Grover Cleveland) had 21 points and 11 rebounds for ECC while God's Gift Achiuwa (Port Harcourt, River States, Nigeria) added 22 points, all in the second half. Jahmill Jenkins (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) had 11 points in a reserve role.
DeJuan McGaughy led Mercyhurst NE with 26 points. Geovante Rose added 22 and 13 rebounds.
Mercyhurst NE opened a 26-12 lead with 8:33 remaining in the first half after a three-point field goal by Antoine Smith. ECC responded with a 17-3 run to make it 29-26 when David Hills made a three-pointer with 3:41 to play.
Mercyhurst NE pushed the lead to 10, 43-33, at half. ECC trailed 70-60 before going on a 25-14 run to take a 85-84 lead on a basket by Achiuwa with 3:48 to play.
MNE's Jason Pitts made a three-point field goal to give it a 91-88 lead. A free throw made it 92-88 before Edwards sank a three-pointer to bring the Kats within one, 92-91. Mercyhurst NE added another free throw but ECC was fouled but could not make the foul shots.
ECC will play Monroe CC at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Flickinger Center.
