DANVILLE, Ill. – March 18 – Shooting woes caught up to the Erie Community College men’s basketball team Friday night in a 90-72 loss to Lincoln (Ill.) College at the NJCAA Division II Tournament at Danville Area Community College. Lincoln, the tournament’s third seed, is the defending national champion and is now 27-7.
The Kats made only 32.9 percent (23 of 70) of their shots in the loss. The Kats, now 28-3, will play Triton (Ill.) Community College in the tournament’s third-place game at 6:30 p.m. (Eastern).
ECC was led by sophomore forward Tyshawn Edwards (Buffalo/Grover Cleveland) who had 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Dequan Jones (Brooklyn/Pacific) added 12 points and eight rebounds. God’s Gift Achiuwa (Port Harcourt, River States, Nigeria), the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, was limited due to foul trouble and finished with seven points and three rebounds.
After Yandell Denis (Brooklyn/Xaverian) scored with 13:58 to play to trail 58-45, ECC made only four other field goals in the game’s next 12 minutes, capped by Edwards steal and dunk with 2:24 left. ECC trailed 81-59 after Edwards’ play.
Lincoln had five players score in double figures. DeMarius Sumrell led the Lynx with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
