ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - March 11 - Erie Community College linebacker Malcolm Ricks (Pompano Beach, Fla./Blanche Ely) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and play football at Wingate (N.C.) University. Ricks, a first-team All-Northeast Football Conference selection at linebacker, started all nine games in 2010 and led the Kats with 65 tackles (45 assists/20 solo).
In 2010, Wingate went 9-3 and earned a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs won the 2010 South Atlantic Conference championship.
Ricks also made 12.5 tackles for losses of 71 yards, highlighted by two quarterback sacks for loss of 34 yards. He also broke up two passes and forced two fumbles. Ricks led ECC in tackles in three games, highlighted by 13 tackles (9 solo/4 assists) against Dean (10/16). He also made three tackles for loss (37 yards), one sack (25 yards) and forced fumble in game.
Ricks also caught one pass for 24 yards on fake punt in overtime win against Alfred State (9/18). He finished fourth in the NEFC in tackles per game (7.2) and tied for third in forced fumbles.
As a freshman, Ricks played in all 10 games in 2009. He recorded 43 tackles (30 solo/13 assists) to rank second on the team. Ricks made 10 tackles for loss of 59 yards, including sacks, resulting loss of 38 yards. He intercepted one pass against Milford (Oct. 3). Ricks recorded a season-high 12 tackles (7 solo/5 assists) against Georgia Military (Nov. 7).
