WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – June 12 – Mike Wagner, a sophomore pitcher/infielder on the Erie Community College baseball team, was named a 2012 NJCAA Division III First-Team All-America selection, announced today by the NJCAA. Wagner (Williamsville/St. Mary’s) is the first Kat named as a first-team selection since Bill Kenyon in 2005. ECC’s last All-Americans were Scott Latshaw (second team) and Emilio Artete (third-team) in 2010.
Wagner, who was named the Region III Player of the Year as well as Erie CC’s Outstanding Male Athlete, was a standout on the pitcher’s mound and in the batter’s box for the Kats. He ranked third among NJCAA Division III pitchers with an average of 1.53 strikeouts per inning (76 strikeouts in 49 and 2/3 innings). At the plate, Wagner was 14th in NJCAA Division III with a .454 batting average.
Wagner struck out 17 batters in ECC’s 3-2 win over Hudson Valley CC in the Region III Tournament on May 5 and he also tossed a no-hitter against Broome CC April 19. The no-hitter was the first by a Kat April 9, 1993.
