ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Nov. 15 - The Erie Community College football team had 10 players named to the All-Region III team, announced today. The Kats' Jacob Wims, Devin Coney and Tyler Blackburn were named the region's player of the year for their respective units. ECC won the 2012 Region III title, its eighth overall and seventh in the past eight seasons.
Wims, a freshman running back from Rochester, N.Y./John Marshall, and Alfred State's Colton Caldwell were the co-players of the year on offense. Coney, a freshman linebacker from New Orleans, La./Independence, was the defensive player of the year while Blackburn, a freshman kick from Montrose, Mich./Montrose, was the special teams player of the year.
Wims, who ran for 555 yards, was named the Northeast Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15 after rushing for 210 yards against Dean (Mass.) College. The 210 yards are the third-most rushing yards by a Kat in a game. Wims is one of four Kats on the offensive team as he was joined by sophomore wide receiver Shayon Headley (Tampa, Fla./Lakewood), sophomore offensive tackle Randy McCray (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) and freshman offensive tackle Sean Plunkett (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius).
Coney, who tied the single-game ECC record with 14 tackles, is joined by four Kats on the defensive squad. Coney led ECC with 67 total tackles (25 solo/42 assists). Sophomore linebacker Kyril Threats (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius), who finished his career with 94 tackles (53 solo/41 assists) to rank fifth all-time at ECC, is joined by freshmen defensive linemen Brandon Cannon (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) and Ken Robinson (Newark, N.J./Weequahic) and sophomore defensive back Dorian Polk (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport). Polk was named the NEFC and NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 17 following a two-interception game.
Blackburn was named the special teams player of the year. Blackburn, who tied the ECC record with a 52-yard field goal against Louisburg (N.C.) College, made five field goals. He also added a 50-yard kick against nationally-ranked ASA. Blackburn became the sixth ECC kicker to make two field goals in one game when he made two against Dean Oct. 13.
