Thursday, April 19, 2012

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - April 19 - Sophomore pitcher/infielder Mike Wagner (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Mary's) threw a no-hitter as the Erie Community College baseball team recorded a doubleheader sweep of Broome CC Thursday. ECC won the opener 6-1 and then recorded a 10-0 victory in game two. Wagner struck out 10 and allowed one walk, that coming with two outs in the sixth inning. ECC has now won eight-straight games and is now 23-11 on the season.

Wagner, who ranks fourth in the nation with a .509 batting average, is now 4-0 on the mound with a team-high 47 strikeouts. He has now allowed 14 hits in 29 innings. The no-hitter is the first by a Kat since Steve Wellenc tossed one against Corning CC on April 9, 1993, a 3-0 win--also in the second game of a twin bill.

In the opener, sophomore Brandon Nemeti (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) tossed a three-hitter and sophomore Dylan Huch (Gowanda, N.Y./Gowanda) had a pair of hits and two runs batted in.

Huch added two more hits and two RBI in game two. Sophomore Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) also had two hits and two RBI while sophomore shortstop Joe Pantano (Fredonia, N.Y./St. Francis) had two hits and scored three times. Wagner also had two hits in the nightcap.

The Kats will play Genesee CC in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday at the ECC North Campus.
