Erie Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Monroe

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2010) - The Erie Community College baseball team (3-3) split its doubleheader Saturday with Monroe Community College. The Kats lost the opener, 6-5, and won the nightcap, 3-2.

In the opener, ECC scored four of its five runs in the sixth inning behind the hitting of freshman Matt Creenan (Clarence), who had a two-run single. Rookie Jesse Zellner (Tonawanda) went five innings, striking out five and giving up two runs. Classmate Ron Lawrence (Cheektowaga) took the loss, giving up one run in an inning of work.

The Kats pounded out their three runs in the first inning with three RBI singles from Zellner, Creenan and rookie Dylan Huch (Gowanda). ECC preserved the win when sophomore catcher Justin Carpenter (Ottawa, Ont.) threw out a runner at second with two outs in the sixth.

Erie returns to action Sunday when it travels to Alfred State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
