BUFFALO, N.Y. - Feb. 29 - The Erie Community College women's basketball team used a 5-0 run midway through the second overtime to record a 91-86 win over Genesee Community College Wednesday night in Region III Tournament action at the Flickinger Center. The Kats, now 14-13, will play Mercyhurst North East, the region's top seed, at 1 p.m. Saturday in North East, Pa.
The Kats were led by sophomore guard Mercedezes Ephraim (Cleveland, Ohio/Maple Heights) and freshman forward Charmaine Weaver (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) as each scored 18 points. Ephraim added 10 assists and recorded seven steals. Freshman forward Paige Hennings (Cheektowaga/Cleveland Hill) added 14 points and 12 rebounds for second double-double. Sophomore guard Riana Ward (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) added 12 points while sophomore guard Bianca Dennis (Cleveland/Maple Heights) added 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Genesee CC was led by Carrie Blunt had 31 points, 21 rebounds and five blocked shots.
The Kats led 69-66 with 10.6 seconds remaining after Ward sank two foul shots. Blunt scored and the Cougars stole the inbounds pass. Rachel Kohlhagen was fouled as time expired and made one of two free throws to send the game into overtime.
Ephraim tied the first overtime session at 77 with 23 seconds remaining with a three-point field goal. The teams then traded baskets, ECC scoring with four seconds left to force OT. ECC also stole the inbounds pass but its shot to win went awry.
