CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - (Feb. 5) - Forward Ryan Vertino (Grand Island) led the Erie Community College hockey team with four assists and one goal in Saturday afternoon's 10-0 victory over Mohawk Valley CC at Cheektowaga Recreation Center Ice Rink. Vertino's four assists all came in the first period as the Kats, the nation's third-ranked team, opened a 5-0 lead. The win improved ECC's record to 14-5.
The Kats opened the scoring at the 5:34 mark of the first period when Nicholas Friol (Orchard Park) threw the puck from behind the net and Mohawk Valley goaltender didn't hold his pads to the post. Just eight seconds later, Paul Brown made the score 2-0 when his wrist shot trickled past the goaltender. The Kats' Mark Kwietniewski (West Seneca), Anthony Domros (West Seneca), and Michael Boice (Kenmore) all scored to extend the lead to 5-0.
ECC did not allow a shot on goal in the first period. It would out-shoot Mohawk Valley CC 56-7.
The Kats recorded three more goals, two of them on the power play, in the second. Dirk Thur (Clarence Center) and Kyle Chase (West Seneca) both scored on one-timers and Vertino notched his goal with a cross-ice pass from Todd Lyness (North Tonawanda).
Steven Milley (Hamburg) would score two goals in third. The goals were Milley's first two of the season.
On the day, ECC had nine different scorers, and was 3-for-5 on the power play.
Kwietniewski, Thur, Chase, and Domros each finished with a goal and assist. Andrew Yelich (Fredonia) recorded his second-straight shutout.
