EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY/PARAMEDIC
Program Description
The Emergency Medical Technology/Paramedic (EMT-P) certificate program at the South Campus is designed to meet the 1998 national standard for emergency medical training. Paramedics staff pre-hospital mobile advanced life support units, as well as emergency industrial health and safety units. Also, many paramedics assume other roles in clinical settings.
This program’s primary objective is to prepare students to become certified as paramedics and effective components in the delivery of pre-hospital advanced life support.
Full-Time (day & evening programs) - The 2-semester, 52-week EMT-P program begins in August and concludes 13 months later, the following August. During the first 32 weeks (first semester), there is a mixture of lecture and laboratory work. In addition to class work, the student will also perform clinical rotations through various Emergency Departments, Morgue, Labor & Delivery rooms, Operating rooms of affiliated hospitals and the Gross Anatomy Lab at Daemen College.
The last 20 weeks (second semester) is primarily spent in the hospital clinical setting and Field Internship clinical rotations. There will be some time spent in a lab setting performing assessment-based management and the mandated NYS final practical examination. The majority of graduates staff pre-hospital advanced life support paramedic units or work in industrial health settings. Approximately 25 percent of previous graduates have completed higher college degrees, many eventually becoming physicians, physician’s assistants, registered nurses, emergency medical service supervisors, and hospital administrators.
