EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY/PARAMEDIC

Program Competencies

Upon completion of EMT course or courses, the graduate will prove competency in those skills pertinent to his/her level of training as indicated below (See Notes for explanation.)

  • Properly conduct a patient history, physical examination, and properly manage medical and trauma patients (B,A,P)
  • Perform proper Body Substance Isolation (B,A,P)
  • Perform peripheral venipuncture using an angiocatheter, butterfly, saline trap, and vacutainer (A,P)
  • Apply MAST trousers (B,A,P)
  • Perform intramuscular, subcutaneous, IV push injections, IV infusions, aerosolized, oral and topical medication administration (P)
  • Calculate drug dosages (P)
  • Perform basic and/or advanced airway techniques to include, but not limited to, esophageal obturator airway and endotracheal intubation (B,A,P)
  • Initiate oxygen therapy utilizing the appropriate equipment (B,A,P)
  • Perform CPR (B,A,P)
  • Perform defibrillation and cardiac monitoring (B,A,P)
  • Perform cardioversion and transcutaneous pacing, 12 lead EKG (P)
  • Interpret patient electrocardiograms and initiate proper treatment (B,A,P)
  • Properly manage central nervous system injuries to include immobilizing devices (B,A,P)
  • Properly manage soft tissue injuries (B,A,P)
  • Properly manage orthopedic emergencies to include splinting techniques (B,A,P)
  • Assist in normal and abnormal obstetrical deliveries (B,A,P)
  • Manage psychiatric emergencies (B,A,P)
  • Manage violence containment (B,A,P)
  • Perform chest decompression (A,P)
  • Operate radio communications equipment (B,A,P)
  • Perform as a team member (B,A,P)
  • Explain role of medical direction (A,P)
  • Demonstrate written communication procedure (B,A,P)
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide an accurate written
  • Patient Care Report (PCR). (B,A,P)
