EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY/PARAMEDIC

Special Admission Requirements/Prerequisites

  • Student must contact the college admissions department for preliminary advisement.
  • Student must seek an interview and advisement with the EMT department faculty prior to registration.
  • Student must meet all of the following prerequisites:
    Current Basic EMT certification
    High school diploma or its equivalent
    Be physically fit to provide advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care. A physical examination by a physician is required, with appropriate immunizations.
  • A student who has previously attended ECC must be in good academic standing.
  • Applicants must not have any convictions for any crime or crimes related to murder, manslaughter, assault, sexual abuse, theft, robbery, drug abuse or the sale of drugs, or currently be under charges for any such crime. (Section 800, 6f, State EMS Code.)
  • It is strongly encouraged that candidates have as much field EMT patient care experience as possible, (NOT DRIVING). Experience has demonstrated that candidates with minimal EMT patient contact experience, have a much more difficult time meeting program requirements. Being an active member of a volunteer, municipal, or commercial EMT unit prior to applying is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!

Math Competencies Required

  • Previously completed a college level math course with “C” or higher. If this is not applicable, then see the following:
  • Complete the ECC math placement test with a code of MTLV2 or higher. If unsuccessful, then one of the following may apply:
  • Meet ECC Math pretest waiver requirements:
     a. SAT score of 500 pts. or higher on math section * or*
     b. Passed the NYS Math Regents examination with a score of 85% (B) or higher within the last 3 yrs. or
  • Complete or concurrently enroll and successfully complete ECC non-credit math course MT 101. This must be done prior to or before completion of the first semester.

English Competencies Required

  • Previously completed a college level English course with “C” or higher. If this is not applicable, then see the following:
  • Complete the ECC English placement test with a code of WRLV3 and RELV3 or higher. If unsuccessful, then one of the following may apply.
  • Meet ECC English placement test waiver requirements:
    a. SAT score of 500 pts or greater on the English section. * or *
    b. Passed the NYS English Regents exam with a score of 85 percent (B) or higher within the last 3 years. or
  • Complete or concurrently enroll and successfully complete ECC English course as indicated by pre-testing or advisement. This must be done prior to or before completion of the first semester.
