
PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDIES
Program Competencies
Upon graduation with an Associate in Science degree in Physical Education Studies the student will be able to:
- Identify critical elements for basic motor skills and develop appropriate teaching sequences
- Describe and apply disciplinary concepts and principles to skillful movement, physical activity and fitness
- Analyze current physical activity issues based on historical, philosophical, sociological, and psychological perspectives
- Describe the organic, skeletal, and neuromuscular structures of the body, identify how they adapt to skilled movement and fitness, and analyze their contribution to motor performance
- Create and use appropriate instructional cues and prompts for basic motor skills, rhythms and physical activity
- Assess individual and group performance in order to design safe instruction that meets learner developmental needs in the physical, cognitive, and social/emotional domains
- Create a learning environment which respects and incorporates learners’ experiences (e.g. personal, family, cultural, and community)
- Communicate in ways that demonstrate sensitivity to all learners
- Use computers and other technologies to communicate, network, and or foster inquiry
- Select/implement appropriate (i.e. comprehensive, accurate, useful and safe) teaching resources and curriculum materials
- Consult professional literature, colleagues, and other resources to develop as a professional
- Use and produce technology to enhance learning.
