Course Descriptions
These classes are designed for refrigeration engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel from the food processing, meat packing, refrigerated warehousing, petro chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Students will become skilled at the operation service and maintenance of industrial refrigeration equipment. Special emphasis is placed on ammonia refrigeration system operation and safety. Classes are held in our new up-to-date facilities located at the ECC North Campus 300 wing of Bretschger Hall.
Industrial Refrigeration I (ME 120)
Topics include: Basic refrigeration theory and the refrigeration cycle, physical properties of various refrigerants, refrigerant performance tables, compressor types, compressor operation and maintenance, lubrication, evaporators, condensers, high pressure receivers, purging non-condensable gases from the refrigeration system and ammonia refrigeration plant safety.
Industrial Refrigeration II (ME 121)
Topics include: liquid feed to evaporators and vessels, direct expansion evaporators, gravity flooded evaporators, pumped and pressure driven liquid re-circulation systems, secondary refrigerant systems, heat exchangers, pressure enthalpy diagrams, two-stage refrigeration systems, use of pressure regulating valves and VFD’s, and defrost systems.
