Kats sweep region’s top team
Freshman Shane Latshaw belted an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Erie Community College (17-14/6-5 Region III) baseball team to a 3-2 win over Herkimer County Community College in the opening game of a doubleheader in Williamsville. Erie completed the day with a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

Sixth-ranked Herkimer entered the game riding a 17-game unbeaten streak and was the lone team with an undefeated record in Region III action.

Sophomore Joe Barrera hit a two-out two run single in the bottom of the seventh of the opener to keep the Kats alive. Sophomore pitcher Kyle Smith went all nine innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three. Both of the allowed runs were unearned.

Barrera had two hits and four RBI to lead Erie in the second game. Sophomore Nick Kanutsu had two hits and two RBI. Sophomore pitcher Terry McFadden allowed five hits and one run over six innings of work to pick up the win. He struck out six.
