Kats fall short at Louisburg
Louisburg College raced out to a 17-point first quarter lead and held on for a 36-19 victory over Erie Community College in the season opening game for both teams in Louisburg, North Carolina.

Erie was unable to contain Jameze Massey, who finished with 362 all-purpose yards, all game long. Massey returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown to give Louisburg an early 7-0 lead.

After a Louisburg fumble on its next possession, Erie responded with a Mike Lawandus 32-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3.

On the next possession, Massey hauled in a 64-yard reception to set Louisburg up at the Erie one-yard line which the Hurricanes quickly punched in for a 14-3 lead. Louisburg would then add two field goals in the opening quarter to take a 20-3 lead.

Lawandus cut the Kats deficit to 20-6 entering the half with a 35-yard field goal with 48 second remaining in the second quarter.

Erie would find itself in trouble midway through the second quarter when Erik Larsen’s punt was blocked through the back of the end zone for a safety. The ensuing kickoff was returned 75 yards for a touchdown by Massey to give Louisburg a 29-6 lead with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter.

The Kats did not quit and on their next possession quarterback Anthony Spinola hit wide receiver Lawrence Coleman with a short pass and Coleman took it down the right sideline for a 54-yard touchdown. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed.

After stopping Louisburg on its next possession, Erie marched 62 yards for a score to cut the deficit to 29-19 with 11:42 remaining in the game. Bert Smith ran the ball in from three yards out.

The Kats held Louisburg on its next possession and were driving the ball but the drive stalled at midfield when a fake punt attempt was unsuccessful.

Louisburg put the game away with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Karl Birkenfiel to Massey with 6:07 remaining on the clock.

Coleman had five catches for 99 yards for Erie.

Defensively, Erie held Louisburg to just 213 yards and had four sacks. Don Wise led the team with seven tackles. Tony Pedachio had six tackles and two sacks.

The game is only the second loss for Erie in season openers since the program began in 2001. The other season opening loss came in 2002. The Kats would eventually advance to the Red River Bowl that season.

Erie returns to action for its home opener Saturday, September 12 when it hosts Northeast Conference foe Alfred State College at noon.
