Football defeats Hudson Valley for Region III title
Freshman running back Brooks Estarfaa’s 34-yard touchdown run with 1:08 remaining in the game capped a dramatic fourth quarter comeback and gave Erie Community College (2-3/2-1 NFC) a 22-21 victory over Hudson Valley Community College (2-3/1-2 NFC) today at Jim Ball Stadium in Orchard Park. With the win, Erie clinched its fourth consecutive Region III championship.

Hudson Valley controlled both sides of the ball the entire first half and most of the third quarter, taking a 21-8 lead over the Kats with 10:53 remaining in the third quarter on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Andreas Hudson to Darryl Thompson.

After managing just 28 yards of total offense in the first half, Erie finally got the offense going in the fourth quarter with a couple of long scoring plays. The Kats cut their deficit to 21-15 on a 57-yard touchdown pass and run from freshman quarterback Tyheen Taylor to freshman running back Zedrick Joseph with 8:14 remaining.

In its final drive, Erie drove 67 yards on eight plays, including Estarfaa’s final run. During the drive, the Kats converted a fourth down and six from its own 37 yard line when Taylor connected with freshman Dwayne Bennett for 21 yards. Estarfaa’s touchdown run came on fourth down as well.

Erie’s lone score in the opening half came on a school-record 99-yard interception return for a touchdown by sophomore Joune Fraser. Sophomore Lawrence Coleman ran in the conversion for two points which eventually was the difference in the game.

Erie finished the game with 299 yards of total offense. Taylor completed 14-of-22 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown. Joseph caught two passes for 72 yards and Coleman caught two passes for 55 yards. Estarfaa finished with 79 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Freshman Rashad Payne led the defense with nine tackles. Nicholas Brock, Malcolm Ricks and Tyler Lopes each had sacks for Erie.

The Kats return to action Saturday, October 10 when they visit Lackawanna College.
