Hockey opens season with a pair of wins
The Erie Community College (2-0) ice hockey team began the 2009-10 campaign with a 7-2 win at Broome Community College last Saturday. Erie then followed it up the next day with a 12-1 win at Mohawk Valley Community College.
In the opener, Erie raced out to a 4-0 lead after one period on the strength of three goals by sophomore Dan Wendt. Freshman Todd Lyness added two goals in the game and freshman Ryan Vertino and sophomore Dan Mocarski had a goal apiece. Sophomore Thomas Smith finished the game with four assists.
Sophomore goaltender Bryan Kalczynski stopped 29 of the 31 shots he face to get the win.
In Sunday’s game, Erie exploded for eight goals in the second period to pull away from Mohawk Valley. Nine different players lit the lamp for the Kats. Vertino, freshman Nick Friol and sophomore Theo Alger each netted two goals. Also scoring for the Kats were Ryan Bauer, Justin Mayberry, Phil DiFrancisco, Paul Brown, Hagop Otabachian and Wendt.
Kalczynski stopped all 14 shots he faced in 50 minutes of work.
Erie returns to action next Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1 when it visits County College of Morris (1-1) for a two-game set.
