Profile
Joe Bauth enters his 18th season as the Kats Head Coach, which makes him the most senior coach in the athletic department. Another winning campaign last year made it 16 straight Regional berths for the team. Bauth enters the season with a 623-327-2 record. His coaching record puts him number one in school history in wins.
After taking over a program that had not won a game the previous season, all Bauth has done is lead the Kats to four NJCAA World Series in the last seven years, finishing fourth twice. He also claimed eight # 1 seeds and four regional championships. He also has been named District Coach of the Year four times (1998, 2000, 2003, 2005) and Louisville Slugger Regional Coach of the Year in 1998 & 2003. In 2003 he received the Diamond Sports ABCA Regional Coach of the Year. Coach Bauth also coached the NJCAA International JUCO All-stars in 1997 and received the ECC's Presidents' Recognition Award for "outstanding mentor" and currently is the Vice-President of the NJCAA Baseball Executive Committee.
Coach Bauth takes the most pride from the numbers of players that have gone on to play at four-year schools on scholarship. He also has logged countless semesters which his entire team averaged over 3.0 GPA, which helps recruit players to his program. Three of Coach Bauth's players have gone on to play professional baseball, Joe Mamott, Tony Stutz, Rob Vogtli, and Anthony Kirbis in 2006. Kirbis was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and is presently playing in their system.
Tilo Mendiola - Assistant Head Coach
Otilio Mendiola begins his 16th season on the Kats bench. Tilo is Coach Bauth’s top assistant as he is involved in every aspect of the baseball program. His main responsibilities will be working directly with the catchers and defense. He will also help with the hitters and pitching staff as well.
Tilo’s wealth of knowledge in every part of the game of baseball makes him a huge asset for this year’s team. He was apart of the Kats’ team when they went to the World Series in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005 seasons.
Mendiola played collegiate ball at ECC under Coach Bauth in 1992 and 1993. In 1993 Tilo excelled at the plate hitting .436 and earning All Region III honors.
Mendiola resides in Williamsville with his wife Joanne and two children, Ricky (15) and Victoria (13).
Joe Mamott - Pitching Coach
Joe Mamott returns to the bench for his eighth season as a coach in a Kats uniform. Mamott has coached with ECC since 1998 before a three year leave from the team between 2002 and 2004. Mamott will serve as Coach Bauth’s pitching coach during the 2006 season. Joe helped the Kats reach their first-ever World Series appearance in 1998, and also helped guide them back in 2000 and 2005.
Mamott played under Coach Bauth back in the 91-92 season before moving on to Canisius College where he would break the school’s single game record for strikeouts (15). In 1994, Mamott was ranked third in all of Division I in strikeouts per nine innings. Joe threw a no hitter in his junior year versus Siena College and would later tack on two more hitless outings in the prestigious New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL). He also earned 1st Team All-NYCBL honors as a pitcher in ’93 while playing for the Little Falls Diamonds.
After his days as a Golden Griffin, Joe was drafted in the 6th round of the MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox in 1994. He would go on to play three seasons in the minor leagues for the Utica Blue Sox, Michigan Battlecats and Lowell Spinners. Joe would later earn his bachelor degree in communications from Buffalo State College and his master’s from Canisius in Physical Education. Coach Bauth is counting on Joe’s experience and knowledge to be a vital part in the development of this year’s team.
Mamott currently lives in the Town of Lancaster.
