Cross country teams finish fourth at regionals

The Erie Community College men's and women's cross country teams each brought home fourth place finishes from the NJCAA Region III championships hosted by SUNY Delhi.

The men were fourth out of seven complete teams. Delhi runners took five of the first seven places to give the Broncos the title. Sophomore Corey Peperro was Erie's top runner. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 29:48 to finish 10th out of  68 competitors. Sophomore Scott Dillon was 17th in 30:22 and freshman John Stark was 25th in 30:59.

Freshman Kateri Walsh earned All-Region honors on the women's side for the Kats after finishing fifth out of 53 runners. She finished the 5,000-meter course in 21:45. Sophomore Amanda Solley was 13th with a time of 22:50 and sophomore Gina Adornetto finished 23rd in a time of 23:38.

Erie will wrap up the 2009 campaign at the NJCAA Division III championships Saturday, November 7 hosted by Finger Lakes Community College.

Cross Country teams fare well at Houghton

The cross country teams from Erie Community College competed in the Houghton College Highlander Invitational on September 26 with the men finishing in eighth place of the 12 teams with full squads.

The men’s event was won by RIT who finished first through fifth for a total of 15 points. The Kats finished eighth with 198 points, led by an outstanding 17th place freshman from returning honorable mention All-American Corey Peppero.

Peppero’s time of 27:03.90 was the second-best time run by a junior college runner, just behind Alfred State College’s John Sweeney who ran seven seconds faster.

Erie’s next best finish was 48th place from Scott Dillon. Greg Grigas and John Stark finished 66th and 71st respectively and Kevin Wartinger rounded out Erie’s scoring in 95th place.

The men’s team is ranked seventh in the country in the latest NJCAA National Poll.

The women’s team was unable to field a full team but did receive a 33rd place finish from Kateri Walsh and 36th place finish from Amanda Solley. Sophomore Gina Adornetto finished in 47th place Antonia Miranda in 90th place to round out the Lady Kat’s finishers.
